Luke was still chuckling to himself as he stepped from the courthouse. It had been too long since he’d pulled one over everyone in the room. He saw The Wolf getting into a black sedan and breathed out a heavy sigh when the car drove away. He had worried that the man might want a word.

He hailed a cab and got in, then started, as the cabbie called his name.

“Nicely done, Luke.”

“Miles? You were watching? What the heck are you doing driving a cab?”

Miles chuckled. “I sat well back. I left as soon as you’d delivered your blow. No one noticed. As for the cab, I was asked to collect you. Hyde wants a word.”

Luke frowned, “So you working for him now?”

In answer, Miles told him to look out the window as they drove slowly past the parking lot behind the building. Chief Dale, Judge Linton, and Jane Darrow were all standing together, talking. But it was the fourth person in their group that really drove the arrow home. Delia was who they all had their eyes on, and from her posture, she seemed to be issuing orders.

“See? I’m still your man, still on your side, working for you. That’s why I’m following Hyde on this.”

Luke met Miles’s eyes briefly in the review mirror. “So you think Hyde knows what’s going on?”

Miles barked a laugh. “Hyde knows everything. The important thing here is that he’s your only hope of making it out of this unscathed. Word is, the underground is full of turf infractions from The Wolf and The Falcon. Things could get ugly fast if you don’t end this soon.”

Luke lapsed into silence, as they wound their way out of Chicago and across the state line, moving from The Wolf’s world to The Falcon’s, and drove over to the correction center in Gary.

He followed Miles into the building, and they went a floor higher than last time. This floor seemed to be mostly a series of offices, but was completed with a fully fitted staff kitchen, and down at the end, doors were labeled “Shower Room” and “Sleeping Quarters.”

“Mr. Monroe,” Hyde said, coming out of a door to their left. “Excellent timing.”

Miles gave the man a wry smile.

“Mr. Penber,” Hyde said, shifting his near-colorless gaze. “I trust you don’t mind me borrowing your associate. I had no desire to get more people tangled in this mess, and he came ready-made.”

Luke shrugged his shoulders. “Miles can do as he pleases.”

Hyde’s lips twitched, as he glanced back to Miles. “Mr. Monroe, unless I am very much mistaken, your work correcting the police’s fraud is currently under attack. I need you to keep them honest. Those statements are going nowhere.”

Miles chuckled. “No problem. Can’t believe I’m trying to keep the police straight. I mean, I’m as shady as they come.”

Luke smothered a laugh, as Miles left them. He’d been thinking the exact same thing. He turned back to Hyde, whose eyes were still on Miles’s retreating back, and decided that Miles’s last statement was untrue.
